Supreme Court on Thursday said that National eligibility cum entrance test (NEET) will be conducted this academic year 2016-17 for admission in medical courses like MBBS and BDS.
The apex court also approved the schedule proposed by Centre and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Medical Council of India (MCI) and CBSE to conduct 1st phase of NEET on May 1 while the second phase will be held on July 24. The Centre and CBSE on Thursday had proposed to scrap All India Pre Medical test (AIPMT) as entrance exam for candidates aspiring for medical courses for the academic year 2016-17.
The Supreme Court on Thursday told the Centre to implement National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) instead of AIMPT. Centre has proposed to hold the examination in two phases. According to Centre and CBSE's proposed schedule 6.5 lakh candidates can appear in the first phase in the first phase of NEET which will be held on May 1.
While the second phase will be conducted on July 24 where 2.5 lakh candidates shall appear. Joint result will be announced on August 17. According to proposed schedule by Centre and CBSE admission procedure will be completed by September 30.
The proposal comes after Supreme Court asked the Centre, Medical Council of India and the CBSE to hold National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical courses. After Supreme Court's direction to conduct a common entrance test (CET) for admission in medical colleges, medical entrance tests which were scheduled to happen over the next couple of months may get cancelled.
